HHat pedal and kick threshold interfering?

Postby dschrammie » Wed Nov 03, 2010 7:09 pm

I think I saw that someone else had this issue at one point, but I don't know if there was any resolution.
Anyway, I'm using a Pintech Hyperhat pedal, which is basically equivalent to a Roland FD-7/8, with a Roland CY-5 pad. My kick is a typical piezo/foam cone DIY pad.
When I start up the MD, without touching anything, and the hhat pedal is up, the LED light is on. Starting up MCT, the green bar seems to be fluctuating like crazy...between about 45-60. I had assumed this was simply indicating that the pedal was "open" so I didn't think anything of it. However, the MIDI monitor "graph" above was constantly registering MIDI notes over and over and over, levels around like 10 or 15 or something...and crazy fast. I depressed the hhat pedal and the MIDI notes in the monitor would stop. I didn't know what to make of that. When I finally got Superior putting out sound, I found that it was actually firing the kick drum. Again, I step down on the hhat pedal, the crazy fast kick drum stops.
On a whim I decided to adjust the threshold of my kick...it was at about 4 or 5. When I changed the Threshold of the kick to 30, low and behold, the MIDI Monitor didn't register the craziness anymore. Back and forth I lowered the kick threshold to see when it would start the craziness again. I found that a threshold on the kick of any less than 6 starts the craziness.
I can only guess that there must be some kind of electrical interference somewhere in my lines, such that the open/closed signal that's fluctuating when I have the pedal open is also triggering the kick. That's my theory at least. Anyone else have any brilliant suggestions?

It seems to be resolved by simply increasing the threshold on the kick, but I'm still curious why it happened in the first place.

Lowering Threshold below 10-15 (depending on the soldering quality, MUXers used, cables used and etc) on any, and especially on the Kick, input will very likely cause false triggering.

Hmmm...well that's interesting. Do you know if there's any reason why it affects the kick more than others?

Sounds like I should change the threshold on several inputs!

Because of a closeness to the HiHat pedal input both on the PCB and inside the MUXer.

I wouldn't mind respecting that 10-15 value, but in my case, the exact same thing occurs when I set the Threshold to 30 or under.
I'm not a a professional welder, but my solder looks fine. I'll check my jack inputs and cables...
