MegaDrum on OSX: Doesn't detect MIDI Input, only MIDI Out

Postby elevenine » Thu Apr 08, 2010 4:20 pm

Has anyone experienced this on Mac OSX before?

One day MegaDrum works fine (I use MidiPipe and Kontakt Player), and the next, I can only detect the MIDI Out, and can't detect any MIDI In from "Megadrum USB"!!

Am using the latest firmware.

I'm not a Mac user but I guess Mac users will ask for more details, e.g.
1. if you can see both MIDI In and Out on a Windows PC
2. Where in the program you try to find MegaDrum MIDI In (maybe with screenshots).
3. In System Profiler (?) what it says about MegaDrum USB.

Sorry Dmitri, was in a hurry to post earlier.

Yes, I can see MIDI In and Out when I run Windows (BootCamp).

In MidiPipe, I don't see MegaDrum in the Inputs:

But I can see it in the Outputs:

And the System Profiler seems to detect it OK:

I use a combination of MidiPipe and Kontakt Player to trigger Steven Slate Drum samples. It worked fine the last time I tried playing (using 20100313 firmware), and now even with the 20100402 firmware and latest OSX update, it just refuses to detect MegaDrum's MIDI In!

I would appreciate it if someone could help point me in the right direction! I've been experiencing alternate moments of joy and frustration with MegaDrum so far!

Try this: if MIDI in is not detected, unplug MegaDrum's USB connector from the computer port and then put it back again.

That's the first thing I tried, and kept trying, to no avail..

Can you try it on another Mac?

I suspect it could've been the app "eTrigger for Mac" that's locking up the MIDI In. When I tried to run eTrigger, it said an instance of the application was already running, when it actually wasn't.

I trashed the whole eTrigger application and the following plist files:

com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist
com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist

And rebooted my Mac, but the problem remains. I can't find any eTrigger plist files and the author of the software claims that no other files were generated by eTrigger except those in the installation folder (which I've already deleted).

Anyone knows how to flush and free up a Mac's MIDI ports?

Dmitri, I don't have access to another Mac right now to test.

I noticed another strange occurrence.

In the MIDI devices page of Mac OSX, it only shows MegaDrum as having a MIDI Out port:
Image

Opening the info box, we see that it lists MegaDrum as having 1 MIDI In and 1 MIDI Out port, but somehow it's not showing:

What on earth could be wrong?? It's driving me nuts.

Okay. I solved my own problem, lol.

Hopefully this might help other Mac users whose MIDI has somehow stuffed up on them/gone corrupted.

I think I've narrowed it down to these steps:

1. Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AudioMIDISetup.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.MIDI.xxxxx.plist (the 2nd file should be found in your Users/Library not the System Library).
2. Unplug MegaDrum and open up the Audio MIDI Setup window under Applications/Utilities.
3. For Snow Leopard users, you might have to open up the Preferences window and make sure both "Audio Window" and "MIDI Window" are checked, in order to see your MIDI Devices.
4. You should be able to select the MegaDrum and click "Remove Device" (remember, MegaDrum must be unplugged or else you won't be able to click "Remove Device").
5. Shut down the computer, plug in the MegaDrum and turn on the computer again.
6. All MIDI going in/out of the MegaDrum should be working again, as the computer detects it as a "new" device.

Wow, somehow Mac doesn't look as much 'plug-n-play' as it's advertised or rumoured about:)
