A question for dmitri:

If it would happen so someone would take up the challenge
and successfully re-implement the decrypting bootloader.
Now he would either give it for free, or sell it for lets say
$2, which is cheaper than ordering a new chip from you.

What would you do?
Continue with the same encryption?
- Someone would make money from your product.
Change the encryption scheme
- Everyone would have to order new chip again.
- If the first one got cracked, why not the second?
Start releasing new firmwares without encryption?

If you are confident it won't be cracked then take
this as a thought experiment.

I will keep both technical and legal outcomes of 'IFs' theories private.

Hi dmitri this is Nishit from India. I had thought of building your megadrum module for my personal use as it had awesome features. The components cost me around 24 GBP (2000 INR) at a local store here. Now due to the protected bootloader version i have to invest an extra 24 GBP just for MCU. This raises the cost nearly twice. Since i am on a tight budget i cant afford this. I opted for this module because it was cheap and less expensive then the other commercial drum modules. But now both of them are priced equally. So it has been very difficult fr me. Kindly assist.

Well, if this commercial module is better than MegaDrum and is priced equally I think your choice is crystal clear and I don't understand what you ask.
And I don't even mention how (and why?) you misquoted the price of Atmega MCU with the protected bootloader.

The drum module commercially available has built in sound modes and the megadrum needs a computer to produce sound. Obviously the option is crystal clear of commercially available product but being a DIY it would be high for a hobbist. I expected some help from u dmitri. But u have pulled me down. And the cost of Atmega MCU comprises of the farnell, shipping, handling, shipping to my place, and all the taxes involved.

If the fact that it's DIY is the only difference (plus, you need a computer to make sounds, which presumably makes it even worse) between megadrum and a 48 quid commercial module, I'll eat my hat. And my pet unicorn.

And what form was this help supposed to take? A programmed chip sent for free? Gift-wrapped and hand delivered, personally, to your door? With a distributable, unencrypted bootloader, perhaps...? Did you actually look at the price of getting a programmed chip from Dmitri? (Hint: around half the price you quoted).

If you feel pulled down by this maybe you need to pull yourself together...
If it ain't broken... fix it until it is.
