Roland CY-13R issues

Postby ibanezwiz79 » Thu Feb 20, 2014 3:59 am

I had an easier time programing the Hi-Hat than I have the CY-13r, so hopefully someone can help. I have absolutely checked several other posts and recommendations, read the megadrum setup section and tried many combinations of xtalk, threshold, etc... Ive also tried using http://powerhell.wordpress.com/about/zo ... d-library/ Roland CY-15R settings as a guide.
I can not seem to get the bell to work correctly. I can get the edge, bow and choke to work just fine but it all goes to crap as soon as I throw in the bell.
Looking at others settings it seems the use something similar to viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1911 where on the ride/bow it is disabled and the rim/edge is set to switch and used for the bell. On mine, that setup produces no sound unless I do the opposite and use the ride/bow for the bell and disable the rim/edge (on 3-way Roland setting). But no matter where I strike the bell and the rim both get triggered. (Im using SSD4 if it matters) I can not figure out how to get any separation...
If anyone is using the CY-13R successfully or has anything else I can try I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks!
P.S. This is a kick ass product!

1. Describe how you connected it, i.e. bow/bell to first jack and bow/edge to second jack or vice versa.
2. Post your settings.

After that post screenshot of what you get in MIDILog when:
1. you hit bow.
2. you hit edge.
3. you hit bell.
4. you press edge.
5. you press bell.
6. you hit bow while holding edge pressed.
7. you hit bow while holding bell pressed.

Okay... maybe Im missing something... but prob just made a stupid mistake misunderstanding your guide. Im getting better results moving the connections... We'll name all 17 MD inputs "1-17" for now. Before I had it hooked up where the Roland Bow/Edge was going into input 6 and Roland Bell was going into 13 and was getting no results. I just reconnected to inputs 16 & 17 and seems to work better. There is a part in setup that says:

For Head/Bow inputs: Can be set to No, Yes or 3Way.
... If set to 3Way, Head/Bow and Rim/Edge inputs are treated as Bow and Bell inputs of 3way pads, e.g. 3way Roland style cymbals, and the next Rim/Edge input is treated as an edge input of the same pad.

It literally means NEXT input, like they cymbals outputs MUST go into sequential inputs??????
The meters are reading seperate inputs now (just gotta tweak threshold and a few basic things) and seems to be heading in right direction. I really thought it wouldnt matter... that somehow MD could sort out the cymbals inputs it's self.

I think I have it figured out, if I have any issues I will post again later. I greatly appreciate you getting back to me though! -David

Yes, Roland 3way cymbals MUST use two subsequent jacks.

I have the same cymbal. One thing that confused me during setup was that according to dmitri's instructions the "Bow/Bell cable" should go into Aux1. However, my CY-13R's bell output is labeled "Bell", nothing more, leading me to believe that's a mono output. That's not the case, it actually is stereo, and plugging it into Aux1, and the other output, labeled "Bow/Edge", into Aux2 got me a working cymbal.

Not yet perfect, it's sometimes hard to get the bell to trigger without also triggering the bow, but that was true with my previous module (TD-4) too. Maybe my cymbal's not that great, maybe I need to tweak some more, not sure.

neumayr, I've tasted CY-15R-MG a lot. I can confirm that it's hard to get bell shots. This cannot be resolved in software/firmware because the problem is in the bell sensor. You need to modify clutch to achieve better bell triggering! I will post a topic how to do it as soon as I have time! Cheers!

I'm also getting frustrated here, but I got sick(not sick from setting the cy13r but actually home sick) so I gonna spend some time with this roland ride thing , after going over their patents I realise that roland doesn't use the resistor(10k) the debut transistor talked about in this forum, So I thought I take the modular approach to this issue, and disconnected the bell connector . As I suspected the cymbal acts the same , it gets bow and edge no choke or bell . meaning I got the setting right on aux1 and need to change aux2 settings or maybe add a resistor somehow ...
I don't know If I'm in the right direction, hope someone can help and hope I helping someone by posting the next setting :
aux one is set as in zurman's guide :
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0ackfmom8u62j40/CY15R_1.PNG
works like a charm.
his setting for aux 2 don't do s#!t as disconnecting the bell connector changes nothing and using only bell connector adds nothing, keep in mind that these are his setting for cy15r and not cy13r and he showed that they are working on youtube, making me assume the cymbals are somewhat different(wat).
I'll keep on trying... If I get some conclusion out of it I promise to post them here by the end of the day.

Couldn't seperate the Bells ...
Got everything else working though, ended up putting two layers of foam and a piezo between them and configuring the aux2 to be just one piezo and connecting it to MD correspondingly , Now I have everything working nice, I have edge and bow and bell ,all chockable (if that's a word) .
Conclusion on my side :
1. don't connect the bell cable to the cymbal
2.configure as in https://www.dropbox.com/s/0ackfmom8u62j40/CY15R_1.PNG
tweak till you get it right ...
3. connect your own bell part with a piezo and configure as single zone

I Know it's a shitty solution but it triggers well and it's the best I can get after spending a lot of time with it...
Hope it saves someone the time and most important the money, as There's no point in buying a roland cy13r with megadrum module..
my settings with bfd3 attached for aux1 and 2.
