mounting ribbon controllers on ecymbals and pads

Postby glenn.szymanski » Wed Jan 21, 2015 3:25 am

Has anyone ever tried or thought about mounting ribbon controllers on an ecymbal or drum pad?

i've thought that it would be cool to mount one on top or underneath an ecymbal in a curved fashion maybe 1/3 of the circumference of the cymbal. and assign it to control a parameter like dampening. especially some of the fun parameters in AAS Chromaphone. Almost like you're bending the virtual metal with one hand while hitting it with a stick in the other hand.

I've only ever made cheap cymbal triggers with plastic practice cymbals. I'm looking to get some nice 3 zone Roland cymbals soon. I know that the "choke" sensor just sends an aftertouch message to stop the sample. Is this an FSR sensor or what? Is it possible to program it to send real time CC messages?

i've only even used a ribbon controller built into a keyboard synth.

are they able to function on a curved surface, or is it possible to make one curved? i was only able to find one site that has a few different kinds...

i've also thought about mounting one on the side of a Roland V type pad, and assign it to a modeled drum parameter, like gliding your finger across the virtual membrane while hitting it.

My diy 3 zone e-cymbals use one switch for edge and choke. In Roland and Yamaha 3zone cymbal pads they use only switches with one piezo for velocity readings. When you hit edge of cymbal it activate edge switch + piezo that gives velocity readings and cymbal produce edge sound. After that stroke when you press edge switch it sends aftertouch for choke. On my cymbals edge switch gives choke on every zone. I have piezo/piezo/switch and edge switch choke even bell zone which is on diferent input of md.
It can probably be use for continius controll. This one can be used for hh controler:

This sensors are used in laptops for scroll up/down position plate.
You can have much fun by makeing some kind of midi instruments with this.
