Best hi-hat controller for Megadrum

Postby glenn.szymanski » Tue Feb 10, 2015 3:40 am

Greetings,

I've already picked out what pads I want to use with Megadrum, Roland PD-120.

And cymbals, Yamaha PCY135 and PCY155.

I just need to figure out what to use as a Hi-hat controller. I already know that I don't want to spend the money for Roland V-11, 12, or 13. I do want to be able to play all the positions in between open and closed though.

I have an Alesis Real Hat pedal that I used with my Alesis D4, it says that it can do continuous control between open and closed, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. Anyone have any experience using it on Megadrum?

I don't really want to go the DIY route, because I've had a DIY kit for the last 17 years and I'm sick of having to resolder things. I just want to have something that is going to be stable and road worthy.

It doesn't really matter to me about whether the hi hat cymbal is on an actual foot pedal stand or not. I was thinking of maybe just using a Yamaha PCY100 and using this Pintech controller...

http://pintechworld.com/shop/pintech-hi-hat-controller/

And I've read a bit about optical/infrared. Is there a commercially available product that uses this?

Thanks,
Glenn

Have you considered the RHH135? Alot cheaper than a Vh11. Drum-tec.de and thomann.de are the cheapest place to get them.

I read a few bad reviews of that pintech controller on vdrums. Building an optical pedal or using the Alesis foot controller maybe more suited to the pcy100.

I'm not completely sure, but the YAMAHA RHH135 isn't a full-range hihat, right? TS asks for a hihat where he could play all the positions between fully open en completely closed.

For a full continius range I can suggest to build a DIY optical or hall effect sensor HiHat controller.

Hello everybody.
Bought my 32 input Megadrum last year and managed to finish my DIY kit conversion yesterday! Sounds great and thanks to all for precious seggestions and solutions I found on the forum. Only thing that remains is the hihat. Going to try to build a 2 zone hat (tip and edge) and use a hall effect sensor for controller. Could you please give me a good link to buy the correct sensor and magnet? Thanks.
By the way I'm going to post some pictures soon.

Wellcome.
I am glad that you found solutions and everything configured properly.
For the hall efect hi hat controler I used A1301 hall efect sensor (you can use 1302 too). I tried first with some other sensors but they was poorly sensitive. For magnet you can use whatever neodymium rare earth magnet. Usual mounting system is: ring shaped axial polarised neom. magnet + hall effect sensor wired as it's described in many topics.

Here you can find every informations that you need for success:

For hall effect sensors, you can find them everywhere:

I did searched *a lot*, and I did look at the links you gave me, although I'm not able to find how the wiring should be done when using a Neutrik NYS221 female jack plug. (what should go to ring/tip/sleeve?) And is there any wiringdiagram/schematics to be found somewhere?
If I recall correctly, there should be some resistor somewhere to, right?

Thank you for your answers in advance...

Vin (Power source) = Tip (pin40)
Vout (output of the circuit) = Ring (pin 39)
GND (ground) = Sleeve (pin 15 or 16)

Find a datasheet for your hall effect sensor on the web to see correct pinouts. Select 'FootContr' in HiHat Pedal menu and for Vout use Low impedance pedal pin (39) from MD.

A1302 pinout order:

That's wiring of my hh controller and it works great without any passive components...

Racer52 talked about Dimitri's optical controller design. Dimitri or any other members, can you point me to the design document? Thanks!
