High Level - strange phenomena SOLVED

Postby airflamesred » Sat Mar 07, 2015 4:25 pm

Just had to change some piezos and found these new ones to be hotter. Setting high level to 900 and I can get velocity no higher than 109.
So high level 900 will only allow maximum velocity at 109
high level 800 will only allow maximum velocity at 122
high level 700 will allow full velocity at 127
I realise 900 is borderline for high level but having to add a resistor to 42 drums is not very appealing.

Are thing meant to be this way?

That is probbably question for dmitri. Only thing that comes to my mind is compression parametre for inputs (but it isn't I know). I had some extremly hot piezos but never had same behavior in megadrum.
That was piezo with very thin metal plate like second one here (highly sensitive with full frequency range)

If with HiLevel 900 you cannot get max MIDI velocity and with HiLevel 700 you can then as far as I can see you don't need to cool it down and it already at or near the maximum dynamic range.

Well 700 is too low, ideally I need to set it at 900 but loosing the top dynamic is no good. Am I the only one with this problem?

Why do you think 700 is too low and what problem do you have? MIDI has only 127 velocity levels so as long as difference between Threshold and HiLevel is above it MegaDrum can get full dynamic range. The bigger the difference the better precision in velocity detection.

Let me try this again.
I set auto high level and for this pad/piezo I get a high level of 900. Untick high level and realise that according to the midi log that no matter how hard I hit the pad it will not register a velocity above 109. There is a definate cut off point.

After checking level shift and all other possible causes, in the interests of research I drop the high level to 800 to see what happens. No matter how hard I hit I can only get a maximum velocity of 122. Close but still missing the top velocity.
I set the high level to 1000 and the max velocity I can get is 97. SO there does seem to be a correlation between the two
I try another pad/input and have the same situation.

Is this not re-producable? Am I going mad?

I still don't get what the problem is. Set HiLevel to 700 and get all velocities up to 127.

I'm not a hard player by any means but set at 700 I can reach 127 very easily. I understood that this meant that the high level was too low.

If at HiLevel 700 velocity 127 is too easy, increase HiLevel until it feels about right.

Am I not explaining this adequately?
I've raised the high level until it feels about right, and that was at 900.
The trouble is with a high level of 900 megadrum is not outputting a velocity above 109, no matter how hard I hit.
