To be honest most videos i have seen online about megadrum seems to have latency but about 90 percent of the people who actually own megadrum said its better (2ms) in latency.
You have to bear in mind that watching you tube vids is not really a good indicator of latency. As I found when I uploaded a vid that the sound and visuals where miles apart. I had to keep moving the sound backwards into the earlier frames.

Here's my rational,
I don't want or need Rolands genetically modified sounds and therefore I only need the trigger to midi part. Even if I came across a TD 9 (with or without pads) it would be vastly more expensive than MD and I'm possibly stuck with Roland Pads. As I mentioned above the TD 9 is a discontinued product, Megadrum runs a very fast new processor.
Megadrum is also much more vesatile in that it will accept any type of pad, cymbal or trigger. You can design your kit around what you want rather than a coorperation telling you that you are restricted to a traditional drum kit and an aux or 2.
So if you want to add extra pads or cymbals at any time then you can. You might start with rubber pads and then upgrade to mesh - no problem just reconfigure the settings.
There are documented settings for most maufacturers pads, cymbals and hi hats.
There is a regular series of upgrades to the MD firmware and MDM.
No other TMI has a pc/mac interface, no more messing with a 16x2 screen.
For my set up I really had no choice but to use MD because of the amount of inputs (I use 54 of the 56) and when I first found it I was sceptical as to how good it was. I'm pleased to report it works fine. Dmitri does a great job here and if there are any problems he will deal with them. None of that corporate approach here.
You will see criticisms that it 'takes endless tweeking' or it's 'difficult to configure' Most of that is hearsay. There are more features , thats the nature of it being so vesatile with input types, most of which you can set once and forget about.
Now, As gig worthy the old school module is, (TD 9 etc) once you've had VST you won't go back! so a laptop is inevitable I think.
So to conclude, I would choose a Megadrum.
