Yeah, that thread kind of introduces the concept, but I later created another one that is linked to in the first post, where the design was improved. I also published those threads on this forum too though, if you go through the off-topic section you should be able to find them.
A simpler 2-zone + choke version leaving out the bell cuts and copper is also possible; it might be a good idea to start making a 2-zone crash, get the feel of how to make it work and then have a crack at the 3-zone one. It takes a fair bit of of trial and error to get the first one right, but once you get the hang of it the rest are much easier.

You seem to have linked to the same sensor twice, but anyway, they should work - and the magnet will also be fine.

Here's a link to alternative (and cheaper) sensors if you don't mind the wait to get them delivered. I've bought these to use in another project and they work fine.

Thanks for the tip on going for a two zone/choke hi-hat - that's all I need and it's much simpler. The part I was having trouble following was the stuff for the bell.

I have an opportunity to buy a PCY155 and PCY135 used. I'm thinking of using the PCY135 with the Ignotus FSR conversion of a hi-hat stand. It's still going to cost way more than DIY but I'm thinking long term it might be a good way to go. Any comments on this would be appreciated.

One of my issues with going the DIY route is I couldn't source the Stagg 14 practice cymbal and I'm worried that others like the Pintech might not be as good.

Yeah those Yamaha cymbals are apparently quite good and are cheaper than Roland's. I've read about the Pintech cymbals developing the "Pringle" warping, which makes them useless for DIYing following my design - they have to be really uniform with no warping.

Thanks for confirming that I should pass on the Pintech, I saw in a YouTube demo (I think official) that they are "floppy".

I had to turn the threshold for the PCY155 up to around 50 when connected to the Ride input (5) - is that normal? I turned the input adjustment on the cymbal all the way down.
