By the way, would it be possible to upgrade from the atmega32-16 to whatever chip that uses 24MHz? Or is such an upgrade so minimal that it wouldn't make any difference?

20MHz is the maximum frequency for Atmega32-16PU.

20MHz is the maximum frequency for Atmega32-16PU.
Atmega32-16PU, Atmega324P-20PU, Atmega644-20PU are all interchangeable. They only need different firmware. For Atmega324P-20PU and Atmega644-20PU max clock guaranteed is 20MHz. They were tested with 24MHz as well but your mileage may vary.
