Settings for Piezo/switch hihats

Postby slayer666 » Fri Mar 14, 2008 8:08 pm

Hi.

I can't get my Roland Cy5 to function properly.

I connected Hihat bow (Piezo) to pin7 on synthex all-in-one version
and Hihat edge (switch) to pin8.

How do I setup the megadrum to make the hihat work with Toontrack EZdrummer?

Since you didn't mention changing any settings I will presume you have them at their defaults.
I presume you connected your CY5 to the HiHat input. In that case:
1. set HiHatB->Dual Head: to Yes
2. set HiHatE->Type: to Switch
3: set HiHatE->Threshold: to around 15. It might turn out to be necessary to set it lower/higher.

Check with MIDI-OX you get different notes with hits on bow/edge and that you see MIDI aftertouch when choking CY5.

Hi slayer666,

Have you had any luck with using your CY5? I'm using a DIY cymbal with switch implementation similar to Roland CY's and can't get them to work either.

Before suggesting anything, can you tell if choking works or it doesn't?

I'm using Keith Reaper switch circuit as posted on toontrack.com's edrum for free forum. Choking doesn't work but when I try to manually short ground with ring, then choke works.

Post the link to the schematic of CY5 wiring with Keith Reaper switch circuit.

Here's the link: http://www.toontrack.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=35166

I also attached the image of the schematic I used below.

FWIW Roland's cymbals don't use the same circuit, the switches they use are FSR (Force sensing resistors) kind of like membrane switches on cellphone keypads. I only say that I use a switch similar to Roland's since the circuit above works for my TD12.

Why would you use this circuit if you could simply use piezo/piezo?

Because the inputs on my TD12 are piezo/switch and would like to use the same cymbals on megadrum. I also wouldn't want to redesign my cymbals to piezo/piezo and lose the choke capability. Or does the megadrum have choke on piezo/piezo?

Besides, a piezo/piezo design would be hard to implement on cymbals because its hard to get isolation between two piezos.

1. The circuit you showed suggests that the pad is actually piezo/piezo. How can you do choke with it?
2. With this piezo/piezo pad and this circuit you can simulate a switch on the rim/edge input by puting a pull-up resistor of 1k-10k value between the input and +5V. But again, choke won't work since it is not a real switch.
