1. In the Options dialog you tick 'Use same Un/Out'
2. In the Options dialog you select 'megadrum usb midi' in 'Midi In'
3. You click 'Ok' to close the Options dialog.
4. In the main window the button next to 'MIDI:' is shown pressed and reads 'Close MIDI'
5. In the Firmware version you see '???????'

Are these the steps you did and no other programs try to access/open the same 'megadrum usb midi' ports at the same time?

It seems to have resolved itself somehow, now I see 20120122. Thank you as always for your quick advice.

Do I need to upgrade annything or should it be handled automatically when required?

And upgrading the firmware using this tool is much easier than the conventional method ...

It is either:

1. USB connectivity problem, e.g. loose USB cable
or
2. You use same ports in MDM and other program at the same time
or
3. You're not using right ports in MDM
