VH12 configuration

Postby Nicholas » Mon Dec 03, 2012 4:13 am

My version of the VH12 I can only get a multimeter reading between the tip and the sleeve for the hi hat controller sensor.

This unit has a sprung loaded sensor with pressure sensing after the hats are closed,

my resistance range is 20 k ohm open - 13 k ohm closed, with very little dynamic range when connected to the megadrum without any modification, infact this resistance range almost seams unuseable.

I have found a lot of information to support this but why are people using resistors on the tip / ring, has the ring got somthing to do with the power feed??

are all the VH11's using tip sleeve for the sensor range even though resistors are being applied to the tip /ring.

I only have a VH12 and assume the latest model.

any information would be greatful

I am getting poor dynamic range with the 15k resistor between the tip/ring, I now have to switch from alter input on to alter input off and switch to low impedance,

maybe I still need to try the 10k ohm resistor and or run through the hi/low range config on megadrum which I don't fully understand.

best deal yet on my VH12 I now have a jack circuit with a 15k ohm resistor between tip & ring.

I am using alternate input = yes with the hi resistance switch enabled (set to buttom of the three positions)

low level = 870
hi level =1023

these are experimental levels, not sure if I should try raising the resistance further?

I get a nice flow on the megadrum bar graph

I can close the hat from the open position and it reaches '14' and when I press harder on the pedal the cymbals close to '0' under max pressure

not for the max pressure to currently work I have the 'auto level's function currently enabled..

can anybody help me with possible further improvements or is anyone interested in further information? I am going to try and work out what some of the other hi hat config settings actually mean, help...

1. Remove the 15k resistor between tip and ring.
2. Leave/set AltIn as Yes and leave/set the impedance switch in high impedance position.
3. Leave/set LevelsAuto as Yes.
4. Depress the pedal all the way up.
5. Set LowLevel to 1 and HiLevel to 1023.
6. Now start to lower HiLevel down as long as MegaDrum allows to (LevelsAuto won't let to lower it below certain level). Once you reached the lowest value, press the pedal and lower HiLevel by 5-10 and remember it.
7. Press the pedal all the way down.
8. Now start to raise LowLevel up as long as MegaDrum allows to. Once you reached the lowest value, depress the pedal and raise LowLevel by 5-10.

What LowLevel and HiLevel values did you get?

Now repeat the same steps with the Low impedance input (still without a resistor between tip and ring):
1. Set AltIn as No and set the impedance switch to low impedance position.
2. Leave LevelsAuto as Yes.
3. Depress the pedal all the way up.
4. Set LowLevel to 1 and HiLevel to 1023.
5. Now start to lower HiLevel down as long as MegaDrum allows to (LevelsAuto won't let to lower it below certain level). Once you reached the lowest value, press the pedal and lower HiLevel by 5-10 and remember it.
6. Press the pedal all the way down.
7. Now start to raise LowLevel up as long as MegaDrum allows to. Once you reached the lowest value, depress the pedal and raise LowLevel by 5-10.

What LowLevel and HiLevel values did you get?

I'd like to join this conversation. I too am having difficulty fine tuning my VH-12, with or without a resistor.

Here I got values of:
LowLevel - 303
HiLevel - 885

This set up appears to work but hardly, very short throw of the footpedal.

Here I got:
LowLevel - 36
HiLevel - 68

This isn't working at all

Just wanted to note that in MidiLog within Megadrum Manager, when the high hat pedal is depressed, the graph for the HiHat controller is not steady, and bouncing around quite a bit. It actually doesn't reach 0, while fully open does reach 127. Hopefully there isn't a problem with the Hi Hats, as it's very intermittent, but I'm still tweeking things hoping to find a solution.

I am glad that people are starting to follow this post as the VH12 / VH13 may require software / hardware fix's and if Demitri is able to help with these fix's much will be appreciated.

A] On my third post this was as of last nite NZD GMT +12 the best dynamic resolution I could get on the hi hat pedal control & was fairly smooth and hardly blocky/jumpy but the figures for dynamic range were not indicating any grand like many other VH11 and similar forum posts.

Tonight when I get home I will post and reply a full set of test results for what I know currently works / what Demitri want's me to test.

Thank you for your support

If I am to help work on a fix what I wan't to know since I havn't taken any measurements apart from the tip / sleeve resistances at this stage with a meter is what signals don the megadrum box's read, is power provided between tip / ring?? and is megadrum measuring voltage as well as resistance?.. I am a bit confused at this stage.

http://vdrums.com/forum/showthread.php? ... ring-VH-12!

This isn't our case but gives some information to be aware about, and some ideas how that sensor works

I would also like to start posts on Roland's VH12 top hat (edge , bow) sensoring as my current configuration shows for an over sensitive bow and occasionally triggers the bow when playing an edge. I however don't appear to ever trigger edge when playing a bow note intentionally.
