Hihat Setting Thoughts...

Postby angr77 » Sat Mar 01, 2014 1:52 pm

Hi!
I am using a Roland VH-11 with the MegaDRUM device...and I am sending the pedal, edge/bow information to a VST (Addictive DRUMS) who is responsible for handling which sound to produce, dependent on the hi hat state. Pedal/edge/bow.

So my all my settings in the pedal panel in MDM are set to more or less zero. (Except high/low level in values and on the closed edge/bow in the notes value) I am using the input 2 for the hi-hat bow/edge as usual.

I have problems with the bow/edge triggering when playing...where not all hits on edge could be heard (its like when playing 4/4 you get 2/4)...and I have always thought that my threshold settings had some problems.

Recently - when I started my e-cajon project and just used the input 2 for triggering two piezo sensors...I noticed that the head sensor input did not trigger at all...and that it was no way in hell to get it to triggering...until I moved the HiHat input in the Hihat Pedal Panel (from 2 to something else). That made me start thinking.

The Hi-hat panel interferes with the input 2...and you really need to be careful how your settings for notes/triggering values are set here, besides the settings on the hi-hat PAD input with bow/edge.

They way I am using Addictive DRUM...(to let it be the hihat brain) is it possible to just get the MD to send the PEDAL CC:04 and nothing else and not interfere with any settings in the HiHat Panel? E.g. should a third dropdown state being added to the Type list? Besides FootContr / POT also add a get a PURE CC04 pedal type.

The best regards

If the the VST is responsible for recognizing pedal positions using CC 4 then you have to set all Notes for all positions/zones in the Pedal settings to the same values as Notes in your HiHat cymbal.

Thanks Dmitri. Ok. So basically the same settings needs to be setup even if the "brain" activity have been moved to the VST?

What is sent if using the POT pedal setting?

Best regards

When it's set to Pot MegaDrum doesn't send CC 4 messages.

Hi again.

I am only using note values in the closed field for bow/edge in the hihat panel, but according to this i need to add notes values in all type input fields? Halfopen etc.

What about the levels in hihat panel for all types of modes?

You must set:

1. all bow notes in HiHat settings equal to bow Note in HiHat.
2. all edge notes in HiHat settings equal to edge Note in HiHat.
3. all bell notes in HiHat settings equal to bell Note in HiHat if it is a 3 zone cymbal.

All OpenLvl, SOpenLvl, HOpenLvl and ClosedLvl settings in this case won't matter.

Many Thanks Dmitri!

i now finally understand how the cc:4 is implemented.

i will give it a real go tomorrow when getting to my rehearsal location...i will also verify the 3 zone Roland Ride with the firmware.

Hi Dmitri.

Tested this approach and maybe things become slightly better. I will try with my original setup where the MD was the hihat brain and compare the feeling.

Best regards

What is the problem when you set notes as I suggested?

Hi. The main issue is when playing on the hihat edge trigger on a 4/4 beat...only the 1 and 3 hit could be heard. (there is no problem if the playing on the bow, then you could hear all four hits)

Lissening to recordings it sounds like that i am playing a 2/4 kind of beat.

On the VH-11, the edge is handled by a switch. It looks like it is generating all hits in the midi monitor....The separation between the bow/edge is good, i can't see any mixed notes when playing on the edge.

However, It could be a problem generated in Addictive Drums. Another idea could maybe be that the minscan for the switch trigger is too long, currently about 40. Too long for à switch?
