No. Most of the pads/cymbals (all I dealt with) produce signals with gradually subsiding signals and so the second half wave is just as good as the first for velocity calculations. Even in your case it would have worked fine if the pad wasn't so "cool". A combination of a "cool" pad and huge difference between the first and the second half wave makes it necessary to make sure the first half wave is positive either with a precision rectifier or reversing piezo polarity.
