megadrum vs dtx502

Looking at converting an A kit. What does megadrum get me that the Yamaha DTX502 wont? I'ml a die hard DIY guy, and maybe its just exchange rates, but this is currenrly looking like a tough sell. Especially since I'll be stuck with Hydrogen rather than Addictive Drums ir similar.

I have a small kit, 1u/1d, hats, crash, ride. So I'm looking at. 16 inputs tops. Maybe a One more for cowbell. The tipping point for me is if there's a better hat control. I 'll be using a real hat stand, and I'm a bit concerned about electronic hats being too easy. Cause most of them are, I suck on real hats, but even I can nake most ehats work.

Anyone want to try to talk me out of the Yamaha (Like it sucks would be a good reason. But my understanding is the 502 is the heart of some if their nice kits, and its like $260us nib.

If you like DIY then the basic kit must be on a par price wise with the 502.
Don't use hats myself so can't help you there but there are a myriad of options in the settings.
Personally I sleep much better at night safe in the knowledge that I'm using the best trigger interface on the planet!

I think there are some guys over at V drums that use the 502 in a similar way.

Why would you be stuck with Hydrogen?

If you're really into diy you can build the module yourself for very little money. You don't need the latest ARM chip to have a module that performs great.

Re: hydrogen, I meant for sounds. No windows or macs in the house. All Linux shop. Buying AD + Windows suddenly jacks up the price quite a bit. I tried to register over at vdrums but apparently nobody is home.

AD runs fine in Linux with Wine, dssi-vst and Jack.

Perhaps I should apologise for mentioning V drums. I've given up posting there for various reasons but I thought you might at least get sensible answers to your questions. The recomendation of a TD11 will set you back twice what a Megadrum would and this rather bizarre quote

'I hear you have to plan on spending 80% of your time programming and 20% drumming when first starting out with the mega drum interface'

is absolute nonsense.

I think best advice is if you can live with the internal sounds in the 502 then your descision is made. If you want VST then you'll need mac or pc and put the budget that way,. In which case MD is your best bet. I'm inclined to think that anyway being an A to E.
Someone would have to confirm but I think MD lite is only programable via MDM.

Thanks. I found a 32 input on ebay I bid on. If I can get it cheap enough, I'll go that route. Looking at what it'd run to build up one.

4 more days before I know if I won. If I can't pick one up substantialy lower than the Yamaha, I'm still considering the Yamaha. Analog boards from FusionPCB wouls be about $30ish ($22 for the Analog, $10 for the Digital board.)

I have some all-in-one pcb layouts if you want, they use 4851 multiplexers instead of loads of bat85s and other stuff.
