Until I added the description of the setting to the documentation in http://www.megadrum.info/content/hihat-pedal-settings , please refer to the description of "Chick Dead Period" (and some others) in "Changes in version 20140518:", "Changes in version 20140516:" and "Changes in version 20140507:" from viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1075
Please note that these settings are only relevant if you enabled "New Algorithm" in HiHat Pedal settings.

Are there any plans on rewriting MDM, or improve the usability?
Off course it works perfectly atm (no offense), but it could be a lot easier if you guide people through the configuration using some tutorials and set-by-step instructions. All the options in MDM/MD are great and make the MD the interface available for drummers, although it's also it's biggest enemy when it comes to usability and why people are hesitating on buying/using the MD.

If you need a usability review, I'm happy to help..

I'm always open to suggestions. I totally agree that MDM may lack in some(many) places in usability so if you have a detailed list of what needs to be changed/improved I will try to implement the changes as soon as possible.
A complete re-design would be much more difficult and time consuming. But the MDM source code is open so anyone with a desire to do it can use it to develop something more user friendly.

I'd love to have a go at this, and will once I can get started. I have the source code and eclipse but then I'm lost.

Java is not my cup of tea unfortunately. But I'm a beast with PHP/HTML/CSS/Javascript.
To be honest I think that Java is a bit odd, because a lot of people are reluctant to install Java because of the security exploits.

Why did you pick Java in the first place? And, could it be written in another language so it would still be cross-platform? (I'm not judging you, just trying to figure out why and if it it could be ported to something else.) Maybe the GUI only, and let the actual source as is?

Java is the only widely available cross-platform environment as far as I know. I just don't have resources to develop separate MDM for Windows/Mac/Linux so I chose Java.
I used standard Java widgets and this is why it looks old style but you can modify Java GUI to look whatever you want and as modern as you like.
And of course you can combine Java with any other native code.

I'm no expert on this, but isn't it possible to make a wrapper only for the GUI? Say the functionality is in JAVA, and the GUI in HTML/CSS.

Sounds good, after all the functionality is fine. Any ideas on the gui and a language, perhaps.
