how can I know if my mac is truly communicating with the MD?

I don't know what you mean by welded to front, are the diodes the 2 components between the keyboard and icsp terminals?

The 20mhz crystal was there at dmitris request to see if my 16 crystal was bad.

Well, I received your package this morning.

First findings :

- 2 diodes (1N4148) are welded to front !!
- Why did you solder the 20 MHz quartz ?

Are you saying that they had to go in a certain way? I didn't realize that, I just assumed they didn't have polarity

could they have been in backwards and still have worked for a short period of time?

This MD did work perfect for about 2 hours or so, until I replace the left button that was bad.

My keyboard worked perfect when it was functioning. The only problem is that I damaged the left button while soldering to it and the internal spring would no longer maintain an "OUT" possition, but other than that, when the button was stuck in an "In" possition, the MD would go straight into the firmware mode, and I could go up and down and toggle through the different mhz settings and then click down to select it, and the midi led would light up telling me it was ready to receive the firmware.
