this is what I've done, I guess I could try in as in and out. Do I need to have pulldown resistor installed before I update the pic?

I went and bought a female db9 connector is the diagram showing the connector from the backside(don't want to reverse wire it) Thanks

For the PIC programming it doesn't matter. The resistor must be present in normal operation.

On the connector all the pins are usually labelled to avoid any mistake.

My db9 connector is not labeled with pin numbers, is the image of the com port on the back of the pc or is it the ?

Thanks for spelling it out for me, I'll advise if I get it working as I think I can borrow a computor from work to do the upgrade. Do you think this will solve my issue?

I don't know. All I can say that with my version of USB MIDI firmware I haven't had a single problem and I've built quite a few MegaDrum modules.
