Roland CY12,14 and 15 users, what Megadrum settings?

Postby ruffneck » Sun Nov 16, 2008 7:54 pm

Hi,
maybe i'm stupid or something but i'm having problems with "autochoke" or it just might be corsstalk between piezo and switch on my Roland cymbals. I'm probably not understanding the different settings.....

If you have a Roland CY-12, 14 or 15 could you please post your Megadrum settings?

Thank you,

Kari

Suppose you will use Aux1 and Aux2 for connecting a 3 zone Roland cymbal.

1. Connect a Bow/Bell jack to Aux1 input.
2. Connect an Edge jack to Aux2 input.
3. Set Aux1H->DualHead to 3way
4. Set Aux1R->Type to Switch
5. Set Aux2R->Type to Switch
6. Adjust Threshold for Aux1R and Aux2R somewhere between 10 and 50 (depends on MUX ICs used). When pressing/releasing an edge
you should see in MIDI-OX aftourtouch On/Off messages for all three zones.

Yes, it supports rim shots with dual trigger pads.

I have to setup How?

Are you having problems configuring it or is it just general wondering?

For me, the Gain parameter makes my megadrum have strange behavior. What I have found is that if I set Gain in the rim higher than in the head, I always get the rim note when hitting the pad. I have to set the same Gain level for both. And I have noticed that setting gain to 2 is making strange things with triggering, so I either set it to 0 or to 4 and everything works good.

But I would need to test all of this again cause Idon't remember well what value didn't work for me

This is almost what i did. I connected the Bow/Edge to Aux1 and Bow/Bell to Aux2. My current Threshold value for Aux1H and Aux1R is 20 and Aux2R is 7. The bell works ok right now. I also set the retriggering to 1 and dynamic threshold to 7 on all channels and this helped a lot. But the problem i have is with a CY-12 where i'm only using bow/edge and i'm using it as a hihat on left side. The sound is like it's autochoking or retriggering really fast. I did set the Note off delay to 300 and this have helped a lot. Is this the correct way to attack the issue? If you put the Threshold for the Yamaha style options to 0 that disables it, right? I'm running BFD2 on a iMac if that matters at all.
And what would the right process be for setting up a dual/tripple zone cymbal?

For ex. Always start with the edge and tune the threshold on that so you get ???? then go to bow and tune the threshold to ??? and then make sure you get aftertouch on all channels when choking?

Sorry about the stupid questions, but i'm really trying to understand everything so i can get the best performance of my megadrum and my drumgear.

Thanks,

Kari

Do you notice the difference to what I suggested in steps 1 and 2?

My current Threshold value for Aux1H and Aux1R is 20 and Aux2R is 7.

Set Thresholds as suggested in step 6, i.e. watching aftertouch messages when you press/release the edge.

If you set BThreshold to 18 and Threshold to 40, hits on the edge below 18 will not be triggered, hits between 18 and 40 will be registered as 3rd zone hits, and hits over 40 will be main rim hits. Having that in mind, disabling the 3rd zone is achieved by setting the same value for both BThreshold and Threshold. Please dmitri, correct me if I am wrong.

For Yamaha cymbals, if BThreshold is set to 18 and Threshold to 40, then hits with simultaneous switch level below 18 will be registered as a bell, hits with simultaneous switch level between 18 and 40 will be registered as an edge, hits with simultaneous switch level above 40 will be registered as a bow.
Since he's using Roland cymbals, he should set BThresholds on Aux1 and Aux2 to 0 and forget about them.
